Attending PAX Prime 2015: Saturday

Last weekend I was able to attend PAX Prime 2015 in Seattle! I’ve attended other PAX events before in other cities, but this was my first time at PAX Prime. The last time I was in Seattle, I flew there for a SWTOR Community Cantina event. At that point of time, I didn’t even know what PAX was, but I quickly learned it was one of the biggest gaming conventions.

I only had a pass for one day on Saturday, which I was lucky to obtain! For those wanting passes to any upcoming PAX events, I highly recommend following them on Twitter, because they usually tweet out when passes are available for purchase. Usually, I’m scrolling through often enough to see the notification, and that’s how I was able to purchase passes at face value and not from a reseller.

Star Wars: Uprising

When I arrived at the convention, the first thing my boyfriend and I did was see the Kabam booth, where you could try out the new Star Wars: Uprising mobile game. The graphics were pretty good, even enlarged on the televisions, one of which showed a looping trailer and the other showed players’ gameplay. I joked that it looked almost as good as Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is a full-fledged PC game! The booth attendants had me playing on the tablet that was linked to the television, so people passing by could watch me play with a purple Twi’lek, who I named Dianah Despair.

Character Customization in Star Wars: Uprising

Character Customization in Star Wars: Uprising

I played through a tutorial, which was easy enough. One of the key things about Star Wars: Uprising is that the story in the game is canon in the Star Wars universe, whereas previous Star Wars games were not. The game is set during the time period immediately after Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and the new movie coming out in December, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. It tells the story of a smuggler type character (like Han Solo) in that time period, where the Empire is still in power but people are unaware that the Emperor has died.

One cool thing about the game is depending on how you design your character, your sister Riley in-game will look like you! If you choose a human race, your sister will look like the character in the picture below, but as a purple Twi’lek character, my in-game sister was also a Twi’lek! I thought this was a very nice touch in customization.

The gameplay itself was very easy. To move, you tap different parts of your screen, and your damage is on auto-attack. You simply need to tap the enemies you want to attack, and your character will hit them until they’re dead while you do other things, like move around. Throughout the game you obtain more special abilities that are all used by different ways you tap on the screen.

Overall I liked the game, but I don’t really spend enough time on my phone or tablet playing games for me to play it. I may download it, but mobile games usually don’t hold my interest. An interesting thing about Star Wars: Uprising, though, is that they will constantly be updating it, and the game is being released with “Chapter 1,” with more chapters to come later. Sounds a lot like SWTOR’s Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion, don’t you think?

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider was absolutely the game I was most excited to see at this convention. There was a huge section in the Xbox area where you could try out the game. I loved it! The graphics were beautiful, even on the Xbox One. I wonder how it will look on a high end PC! Gameplay looked like cinematics, and the small part of the game you could play teased some very interesting things about the story, which I won’t say here to avoid any possible spoilers.

I am really tempted to purchase an Xbox One just to play this game in November, but I could probably wait until it’s released for PC. However, I did prefer playing the game with the Xbox controller and not a keyboard. I have the last game in the Tomb Raider series on PC, which I played with the keyboard and mouse, and the controller was more fun and easier to use considering the types of controls and abilities you use in game. I guess I could plug in an Xbox controller to my PC, but I’ve got a lovely television and couch in the living room to play on!

Pokemon Trading Card Game

When I was in the 6th grade, I remember getting a starter pack of Pokemon trading cards, but my parents never purchased more for me. However, I still enjoy the franchise and love playing Pokemon games on the Nintendo Gameboy and DS. Here at the convention, Nintendo had an area where you could play their new online Pokemon Trading Card Game –kind of like Hearthstone—and also simply play the game with cards on a table.

My boyfriend had never played any Pokemon games, but we played a round of the trading card game with actual cards, not online. An attendant helped us, since it had been a while for me and my boyfriend didn’t know how to play. I won, but I think it was due to having a better hand, not based on skill!

MSI MGA 2015 Global Grand Finals: Heroes of the Storm

I’ve played Heroes of the Storm before, but MOBAs aren’t really my type of the game. However, my boyfriend has played the game and others like it, such as League of Legends, so it was exciting to see a live, global tournament at the convention! It was the Global Grand finals, and we watched MVP Black (Korea) play against Tempo Storm (US). We only watched one round for time’s sake. MVP Black clearly did better than Tempo Storm, but the US team did make a small bit of a comeback at the end of the round. Obviously it wasn’t enough to win the best out of five, and MVP Black won the grand final championship of Heroes of Storm!

Ivar’s Seafood

We left the convention floor and met up with our friend Larry Everett, writer of Hyperspace Beacon and Massively OP. We walked to a local seafood restaurant called Ivar’s, which was on the waterfront near the ferris wheel! I had a sourdough bread bowl of clam chowder, which was pretty good, but I think I like New England clam chowder better! Perhaps I would’ve liked a salmon dish more. My favorite part of Ivar’s though was the sign that said that you couldn’t overfeed the seagulls, so I spent some time throwing my leftover food at the birds, who either skillfully caught or snatched food out of my hands! Lots of fun.

The Prime Party @ EMP Museum

After dinner, we met up with more SWTOR players at the The Prime Party, presented by Azubu and Smite, located at the EMP Museum near the Space Needle! I’m glad to have met people I’ve only interacted with online for the first time, like Vixstra and her friend Cassie, Ajay, Caligari, Forest, and Ed! Bam from WOOK who I’ve met quite a few times was also there, as well as Redna of It’s a Trap Podcast and Larry.

I drank a few beers (Fat Tire, because I did not want the Pale Ale or IPA that were also available) and watched as PAX attendees danced in front of the DJ! It was a bit funny to me seeing “nerds” in a somewhat nightclub environment, but their dancing was entertaining. I’m glad that people were having fun though, regardless of how out of place people seemed. We left the party to go somewhere quieter and had seats, so we went to a nearby brewery called McMenamins to finish out the night.

I’m happy to have met people I’ve known online for a while, and hopefully I’ll be able to attend more conventions in the future! This year has been a bit wild for me as far as conventions go, and I’m not sure the next time I’ll be able to attend another one!
